From New Latin panmixia, from Ancient Greek παν- (pan-, every, all) + μίξις (míxis, mixing, mingling) + Latin -ia.

Noun[edit]

panmixia (uncountable)

  1. (ecology) A situation in which an individual is just as likely to mate with a randomly chosen individual as any other in the population.
  2. (biology) The cessation of natural selection, as on a useless organ.
