From French parenthèse, Italian parentesi, German Parenthese, English parenthesis, all from Late Latin parenthesis (addition of a letter to a syllable in a word), from Ancient Greek παρένθεσις (parénthesis). Compare Portuguese parêntese, Spanish paréntesis, Romanian paranteză, Swedish parentes, Turkish parantez.
