  1. (chemistry, obsolete) The act or process of combining with phlogiston.
    • 1810, George Wilson, M.D., F.R.D.E., “General Sketch of Cavendish's Scientific Researches and Discoveries”, in The Life of the Honble Henry Cavendish, page 43:
      When [Henry Cavendish] commenced those researches, he found an opinion prevailing, that the production of fixed air, or carbonic acid, is the invariable result of what he called the phlogistication, and we should call the deoxidation, of atmospheric air.
