Borrowed from Ancient Greek φοινικῖτις (phoinikîtis), feminine of φοινῑκῑ́της (phoinīkī́tēs, date-palm wine), from φοῖνῑξ (phoînīx, date-palm) + -ῑ́της (-ī́tēs).
