From Provençal piquar, from Vulgar Latin *pikkāre (compare Occitan, Catalan, Portuguese, and Spanish picar), itself either from an onomatopoetic root *pikk- (cf. also Latin picus, whence French pic), or alternatively, from Frankish *pikkōn.
