Etymology 1[edit]

From Middle Dutch pipen (to play a wind instrument, to pipe), from Old Dutch *pīpan, from Proto-West Germanic *pīpan, from Proto-Germanic *pīpaną. Perhaps equivalent to pijp +‎ -en.
