From Proto-Algonquian *piiškwa. Cognate with Mi'kmaq pi'gw, Cheyenne pe'e, Massachusett peeksq, Miami apeehkw, Montagnais pishkᵘ (“nighthawk”), Atikamekw pickw, Northern East Cree ᐲᔥᒄ (piishkw), Penobscot pəskʷ. Possibly cognate with Dakota píško (“nighthawk”).
