From Proto-Algonquian *maškyeᐧkwi (“swamp, muskeg”). Cognate with Cree ᒪᐢᑫᐠ (maskek, “muskeg, swamp”), Penobscot mə̀kəwahk (“swamp”), Mohegan-Pequot mahcáq, Unami tëlamàskèk (“swamp”), Menominee maskīk (“swamp”), Montagnais massekᵘ (“marsh, bog, muskeg”), Southern East Cree ᒪᔅᒉᒄ (mascekw, “muskeg, bog”), Northern East Cree ᒥᔅᒑᒄ (miscaakw, “muskeg, bog, swamp”).
