Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic похъвица (poxŭvica), diminutive of похъва (poxŭva), from Proto-Slavic *poxъva (sheath, scabbard). Cognates include Polish pochwa, Belarusian похва (póxva), Czech pochva, Slovak pošva.
