Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic похъвица (poxŭvica), diminutive of похъва (poxŭva), from Proto-Slavic *poxъva (“sheath, scabbard”). Cognates include Polish pochwa, Belarusian похва (póxva), Czech pochva, Slovak pošva.
