From earlier prevoire, from Vulgar Latin *previterum, *prebiterum, from Latin presbyterum, accusative of presbyter (cf. the synonym prestre derived from the nominative form). Compare Occitan preveire.

Usage notes[edit]
According to some sources, prestre and provoire were once inflected forms of the same word. Even so, the two rarely appear in texts together.
