Icelandic[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Attested since the 18th century. Same as Faroese røðari. Ásgeir Blöndal Magnússon does not give the exact derivation, but the Icelandic and Faroese forms are probably derived from a late Old Norse form *rœðari. Compare the attested Old Norse forms rœði and rœðir and German Ruderer. Ultimately from the root of the verb róa (to row) (Proto-Germanic *rōaną).

Pronunciation[edit]

Noun[edit]
