Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *h₁reyp- (to tear), which would make it closely related to rífa (to tear, rip), Proto-Germanic *rippōną (to tear off), etc. Compare Proto-Indo-Iranian *rayš- (to be hurt, injured).
