Old English[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Apparently from Proto-West Germanic *rōþrijō (literally rudder-er), though there are no cognates. Ultimately derived from an earlier form of rōþor (oar, rudder). Compare German Ruderer, which is formed similarly with a different agent suffix.
