From Malay remaja, from Javanese ꦉꦩꦗ (remaja, adolescent), from Old Javanese *rumāja (young), rāja (king) +‎ -um- (become), from Sanskrit राजा (rājā), nominative singular of राजन् (rājan, king). Cognate Sundanese rumaja.
