Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Finnic *riista of uncertain meaning. Earlier sense probably "object, wares; corn", perhaps adopted as a noa-name for game. Cognates include Estonian riist (“device, instrument; wooden container”), Ingrian riista (“thing, object”), Karelian riista (“game”), Veps rišt (“long time”) and Votic riissõ (“thing, object”).
