Inherited from Middle French riz, ris, from Old French ris, from Old Italian riso, risi, from Byzantine Greek ὄρυζα (óruza), ὄρυζον (óruzon). The spelling in -z after the Greek and Latin oryza, adopted in order to distinguish from ris (several senses).
