Etymology[edit]
From Dutch rood, of which the inflected form is rooie in Northern Dutch (in particular Hollandic) colloquial speech. Further from Middle Dutch rôot, from Old Dutch rōd, from Proto-Germanic *raudaz, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁rowdʰós, from the root *h₁rewdʰ-.
