Etymology[edit]

From Tobelo habari, from Ternate habari, from Classical Malay خبر (khabar), from Arabic خَبَر (ḵabar). The initial ⟨s⟩ is due to misinterpretation of one of the well-known sound correspondences between most North Halmahera languages and Tobelo, s : h.
