Etymology[edit]

From samo- +‎ bramka. Calque of German Selbsttor. According to J. Miodek (see e.g. Rzecz o języku, 1983) it is a neologism created by the editorial staff of the Sport newspaper in the 1970s in order to replace the negatively associated expression bramka samobójcza (literally suicidal goal).
