sand dome (plural sand domes)

  1. (rail transport) A sand reservoir mounted on top of the boiler of a steam locomotive. The sand was used on wet rails to prevent slipping.

Usage notes[edit]

A sand dome shouldn't be confused with a steam dome, which were also fitted on top of locomotive boilers.
