From Middle High German schoumen, schemen, schūmen, from Old High German scūmen, skūmen, from Proto-West Germanic *skūmijan (to foam, froth), from Proto-West Germanic *skūm (foam). Cognate with German Low German schumen, Dutch schuimen.
