From Middle Dutch schape (“form”). Ultimately from Proto-Germanic *skapą (“shape, nature, condition”), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kep- (“to split, cut”). Cognate with English shape (“form”), Middle High German geschaf (“creature”), Icelandic skap (“state, condition, temper, mood”). Related to Dutch scheppen (“to create”).
