Origin uncertain. Apparently related to German Low German schüün (“slanting, sloping”), Saterland Frisian schüün (“slanting, sloping”), West Frisian skean (“slanting, sloping”), Middle English askoin (“at a slant, askance”), Norwegian skeina (“to move obliquely”).
