Noun[edit]

scolopale (plural scolopalae or scolopales)

  1. (entomology) A tube-like structure on the chordotonal organ of an insect.
    • 1948, Kjell Ehnbom, Studies on the Central and Sympathetic Nervous System and Some Sense Organs in the Head of Neuropteroid Insects:
The organ is composed of a somewhat restricted number of scolopalae, which are connected with sense cells that are also few in number.
    • 1976, Peter John Mill, Structure and Function of Proprioceptors in the Invertebrates, page 348:
These scolopidia respond only to extreme depression of the tarsus and thus length differences of the scolopales can account for their angular sensitivity.
    • 1989, Franz Huber, Thomas Edwin Moore, Werner Loher, Cricket Behavior and Neurobiology, →ISBN, page 400:
This ciliary portion of the dendrite runs through a fluid-filled extracellular space, surrounded by the scolopale cell, and then the dendrite expands into the ciliary dilatation before entering the cap.
    • 2012, A. B. Borkovec, Edward P. Masler, Insect Neurochemistry and Neurophysiology, →ISBN, page 434:
The side of the scolopale facing the cilium is smooth, whereas the side facing the cytoplasm of the scolopale cell is irregular. Proximal to the cilium, the scolopale divides into short columns which fit into invaginations of the dendrite.
