From Middle English *se-snail, from Old English sǣsnæġl (seasnail), equivalent to sea +‎ snail. Cognate with Danish søsnegl (seasnail), Norwegian sjøsnegl (seasnail), Icelandic sjósnigill (seasnail).

The fish name likely a clipping of seasnail(fish).
