Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Italian serraglio, from Ottoman Turkish سرای (seray, saray, palace), from Persian سرای (sarây). When loaned from Turkish to Italian, the word was connected to the pre-existing serraglio (animal cage), from Medieval Latin serrāculum. Cognate of French sérail, German Serail.
