  1. A filamentous colony of bacteria (e.g. Sphaerotilus natans) and fungi (e.g. Fusarium aqueductum), protozoa and other species, which may be found adhering to surfaces in sewage treatment plants or in natural waters as a result of the discharge of incompletely treated waste water.
