Etymology[edit]
From Old Norse sjóðr, from Proto-Germanic *seudaz, cognate with Lithuanian siūdas. Originally a nominalized past participle of Proto-Indo-European *syuh₁- (“to sew”) (Proto-Germanic *siwjaną).
