Etymology[edit]

From Old Norse skjár, from an earlier *ské (<*skéi, similar in composition to lé, klé), whence also Faroese skíggi. Ultimately from Proto-Germanic *skĭa-, *skiō-, related to *skīnaną (“to appear, shine”).[1]
