English[edit]

Etymology[edit]

One suggestion is that the term in its meaning of "children's slide" derives from the literal meaning by extension. Another is that it derives from Dutch glijbaan or the earlier form glijd-baene: note the common pronunciation of pond in sliding pond as /pɑn/.[1]

Pronunciation[edit]

  2. (obsolete) An area of the ground or flooring made very smooth so people may slide.
