From Proto-Turkic *sōr(a)- (to ask).[1] Cognate with Azerbaijani sormaq, Kazakh сұрау (sūrau, to ask, inquire), Turkmen soramak (to ask, query), Tuvan сураар (suraar, to seek, look for), Uzbek soʻramoq (to ask, request), and Uyghur سورىماق (sorimaq, to ask, question, request). Also cognate with Mongolian сурах (surax, to learn, study, ask), a Turkic borrowing.
