Etymology[edit]
From s- + pariglia (“pair, couple”) + -are.
Verb[edit]
sparigliàre (first-person singular present sparìglio, first-person singular past historic sparigliài, past participle sparigliàto, auxiliary avére)
- (transitive) to uncouple, to decouple (horses, etc.)
- (transitive or intransitive, card games) to make a trick of cards of (a specified value) along with others of a different value (leaving another card of the specified value unmatched; in the games of scopa or scopone) [auxiliary avere]
- (transitive or intransitive) to create confusion or introduce an element of surprise or novelty; to shake up, to unsettle [auxiliary avere]

- (shake things up): Often used in the expressions sparigliare le carte, sparigliare il gioco, sparigliare la situazione, etc.
