Czech[edit]

Pronunciation[edit]

Adjective[edit]

spisovný

  1. of language or words, official (of language or words, as codified for official and representative function)
    Antonym: nespisovný

Usage notes[edit]

  • The term spisovná čeština is usually understood to include neutral, archaic and literary language, as well as language labeled by sources as hovorová čeština. Excluded from the notion are terms labeled as obecná čeština, dialectal Czech, slang and argot. Thus, forms like černej and dělajou are excluded from spisovná čeština, unlike černý and dělají. Czech words and forms characteristic of speech as opposed to writing, which might be labeled as informal or colloquial, are classified as either hovorová or obecná, the former being spisovná, the latter nespisovná. This distinction is not marked in the English Wiktionary. Some only consider terms listed in Pravidla českého pravopisu, an authoritative list of words, to be part of spisovná čeština. For a longer exposition, see the talk page of the entry.
  • The term is sometimes translated as "standard".
