From Proto-West Germanic *stiki, from Proto-Germanic *stikiz, whence also Old High German stih (prick, sting, stitch), Gothic 𐍃𐍄𐌹𐌺𐍃 (stiks, point), Old Frisian stek, steke (point) and Old Saxon stiki (prick, stab).
