Probably from stra- + bile + -are.

strabiliàre (first-person singular present strabìlio, first-person singular past historic strabiliài, past participle strabiliàto, auxiliary avére)
- (transitive) to astonish, to amaze
- (intransitive) to marvel, to be amazed [auxiliary avere] (although the composed tenses are rare in this meaning)
