Vietnamese[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Sino-Vietnamese word from (new) and (elect).

Pronunciation[edit]

Adjective[edit]

tân cử

  1. -elect.
Tân cử tổng thống bắt đầu chọn các bộ trưởng.
The president-elect is beginning to choose his/her cabinet secretaries.

Usage notes[edit]

Traditionally, this word precedes the noun that it modifies, for example tân cử tổng thống (literally president-elect). By contrast, the usual order in Vietnamese is noun-adjective order, especially when a compound word modifies another compound word. Usage in Vietnam has shifted in favor of noun-adjective order, i.e., tổng thống tân cử. However, tân tổng thống remains common.
