Etymology 1

Probably from Proto-Finno-Ugric *terä (“cutting edge, peak, tip”), though ő is unexpected. Tálos (1993) proposes derivation from Proto-Iranian *tigra-, compare e.g. Persian تیر.

Uncertain. Perhaps borrowed from a Turkic language before the times of the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin (at the turn of the 9th and 10th centuries).
