Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Germanic *tabną, ultimately from the Proto-Indo-European root *deh₂p-. Cognate with Old Armenian տաւն (tawn, feast), Latin daps (sacrificial feast), Ancient Greek δαπάνη (dapánē, expenditure), δάπτω (dáptō, I devour).
