Etymology

From thứ (“-th”) +‎ hai (“two”). "Second" could also be, less frequently, thứ nhì. Even though the name suggests it is the second day of the week, Monday is actually considered the first one; compare Portuguese segunda-feira (“Monday”, noun, literally “second week day”).
