From thelë +‎ -më. Alternatively from a hypothetical Proto-Indo-European *ḱelmn̥, enlargement of Proto-Indo-European *ḱel- (to cover; hide; protect) (cf. kallëm), a formation paralleling Latin tegimen which also used a Proto-Indo-European root meaning 'to cover'.
