thermite reaction (plural thermite reactions)

  1. (inorganic chemistry) An exothermic redox reaction between a metal and metal oxide as reactants, such as aluminium and iron oxide.
    Fe2O3 + 2 Al → 2 Fe + Al2O3 + heat.
