  1. Extremely close, either physically or metaphorically; especially used when discussing frustration, barely maintaining one's composure or patience, etc.
    I am this close to turning the car around and cancelling this entire vacation. Don't try me!
    We were like sisters; we were this close.

Usage notes[edit]

Originally used with some indication of closeness to which the "this" referred, e.g. holding up two fingers very close together; subsequently used without any gesture, as the meaning is understood. Compare up to here.
