Inherited from Old French tonliu, tolniu, from Vulgar Latin *tolōnēum, variant of Latin telōnēum (tollbooth, custom house), from Ancient Greek τελωνεῖον (telōneîon, custom house). Influenced by lieu due to folk etymology.
