  1. One who is employed to manage the towing of a vessel.
    • 1978, Mark Williams, No cure, no pay: the story of salvage at sea, page 169:
      Each tug captain has a detailed set of tow-out instructions, positions and timing procedures. However, the whole float-out is controlled by a towmaster, who directs and controls all towing operations.
