From Middle High German triuwe, from Old High German triuwi (true), from Proto-Germanic *triwwiz (true, faithful). Cognate with German treu, Dutch trouw, Saterland Frisian trjou, English true, Icelandic tryggur, Swedish trygg, Gothic 𐍄𐍂𐌹𐌲𐌲𐍅𐍃 (triggws).
