Etymology[edit]

Shortening of Old Dutch intwiskan, originally a prepositional phrase *in twiskan. The latter word is from Proto-Germanic *twiskaz, *twiskijaz (twofold, double), from Proto-Indo-European *dwís (twice, doubly; in two).
