From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *r/g-wa (village). Cognate with Burmese ရွာ (rwa, village), Horpa rə və (village), Yongning Narua ʁwɤ³³ and Rawang rvwá (village). Compare Lhao Vo vo, Zaiwa wa and Longchuan Achang o⁵⁵.
