From Proto-Germanic *wanaz (“absent”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁weh₂- (“to be lacking, be empty”). Cognate with Old English wana, Old Frisian wan, won, Old Saxon wan, Old High German wan, Gothic 𐍅𐌰𐌽𐍃 (wans).
