Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Possibly borrowed from Romance, akin to Italian vapa (flame), Romanian văpaie (flame),[1][2] although the Italian term is a poetic hapax found in rhyming context,[3] while the Romanian one is actually often derived from Albanian.[4] Alternatively compare Italian afa (sultriness), possibly ultimately from a Paleo-Balkan *āpʰā, of which vapë would be the regular Tosk outcome.
