Etymology[edit]

A formation in -s of Proto-Albanian *awa-deja, from earlier *dej, continuing Proto-Indo-European *dʰōh₂u-. Compare Old Church Slavonic давити (daviti, suffocate), Gothic 𐌰𐌷𐌳𐌰𐌿𐌹𐌸𐍃 (ahdauiþs, tormented), Old Irish díth (end, death), Avestan 𐬛𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬌𐬛𐬍 (duuaidī, we press), Latin fūnus (death) and English die.
